Hummingbirds!!!

 Hummingbirds!!!

by DJ Featherton

Hummingbirds! They’re unearthly! They fly forward. They fly backwards. They stop in midair and hover. Their wings beat over 80 times per second! Wow! They fly 500 miles across the Gulf of Mexico nonstop, and they’re only the size of your finger*! They build nests that are architectural wonders. They have feathers that magically light up! How do they do that?

They have an active heartbeat of 1200 and resting at 650 per minute, and all with no symptoms of high blood pressure! They come in bunches of different kinds and colors. Where do these creatures come from? Are they prehistoric? Were there gigantic hummingbirds back in the days of the dinosaurs? Hummingbirds! There’s nothing like them! I’m tellin’ ya, they’re unearthly, but a treat to behold!

They make nests of cobwebs and lichen where they incubate eggs the size of peas. The bee hummingbird is native to Cuba and is rarely spotted on other nearby islands. WOW! SO TINY!!!
